About Southern Chestnuts

110 acres in the north Georgia mountains. Chestnuts and chickens β€” grown together as one system.

🌳

The Farm

Southern Chestnuts LLC operates on 110 acres at 691 McEntire Rd in south Murray County β€” north Georgia farmland in the foothills of the Cohutta Mountains, with the kind of climate and soil that chestnuts thrive in.

We grow chestnuts because we believe there's a real market for quality American-grown chestnuts sold direct to people who care about what they eat. No grocery store shelf life, no wondering where they came from.

The farm is part of the same operation as Crestview Orchards β€” where we also raise pasture chickens using a regenerative system designed around the chestnut orchard.

A Regenerative System

The chestnut orchard and the chicken operation aren't separate β€” they're designed to work together.

🚜

Chickens in the Orchard

Pasture-raised chickens in mobile chicken tractors rotate daily through the rows between the chestnut trees. They fertilize the soil, scratch out weeds, and eat insects β€” reducing pressure on the trees without any chemical inputs.

🌱

Living Pasture

The orchard floor is a managed mix of Tall Fescue, Rye grass, and Durano clover. The clover fixes nitrogen naturally, the grasses hold the soil, and the whole mix feeds the chickens as they move through.

Each Cycle Improves the Land

Every pass of the chicken tractors leaves the orchard in better shape β€” more organic matter, better soil biology, less weed pressure. The chestnuts and the chickens build on each other season after season.

Why We Grow Chestnuts

🌲

Suited to the Land

The north Georgia foothills are excellent chestnut country β€” the right soil, the right elevation, the right rainfall. We're growing something this land is built to produce.

American Heritage

The American chestnut was once a cornerstone of eastern forests and Appalachian farming. Growing chestnuts in Georgia is part of bringing that back β€” starting with quality product sold to people who appreciate it.

πŸ“ˆ

A Growing Market

Most chestnuts sold in the US are imported. Demand for local, traceable, fresh chestnuts is real β€” and most buyers have never tasted one that came from a farm they could actually visit.
